Natural\Traditional Horsemanship   Negative Reinforcement (R-)

Negative reinforcement is most commonly referred to as pressure-release and is used exclusively by most Natural and Traditional horsemen.  Some like Mark Rashid, have learned how to include negative punishments (timeouts) and others have included some positive reinforcement (often a simple sugar lump reward).

* Note the terms Negative and Positive do NOT refer to good or bad.  In behavioural psychology Negative simply refers to 'removal of something' - usually pressure-  and positive to 'addition of something' - a reward.

Attitude and willingness to perform can also be affected by the training methods we choose to use. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool that creates a horse that wants to do whatever you ask it.  A horse that wants to impress you, rather than simply avoid discomfort or pain. There's much more to clicker training than just target training and it can solve common problems or be added to your current training methods.

Key Benefits of Clicker Training

  • Your horse will learn how to learn quickly and be enthusiastic about your training sessions.
  • You learn how to teach your horse in a much more effective way, you learn how to break down tasks into learnable chunks.
  • The horse is never wrong, so Clicker Training is particularly effective for previously abused or very sensitive horses.
  • No force is required, just patience.  Timid or new horse owners can overcome even the most boisterous or bad mannered horse.
