Magazines are the ideal way to keep up to date with current events, products and ideas.  They're in a handy format that allows you to take them anywhere and read the articles as you want to.  Unfortunately, they're also relatively expensive in NZ.

This page sets out the range of magazines that I've found in NZ, the price on the shelf (this will vary from shop to shop) and the published subscription price, the type of coverage in the magazine and how much of it appears to be advertisements vs articles.

New Zealand Horse and Pony

Price NZ: $4.95
Subscription Price (NZ): $49.90 per 12mths Phone: +649 302 1318   - Subscriptions are SLOW
Published: NZ, official publication of the NZ Pony Club
Topics Covered: General, NZ people and events, NZ Shows, Vet notes, For Sale, Books & Videos, various sports, NZ Pony Club News: Between 50 - 80 pages + 'Sale-Ring" section.  If you're looking for information on the local scene this publication certainly covers it well and has plenty of stories on local horse events and people.  However it doesn't really cater for anyone new to riding or provide much information to improve your riding.

Update 2001 - this has improved over the last mths - dressage and jumping clinics have begun to appear but still tends to cater more for the show scene.

Practical Horseman

Price NZ: $11.50 - original price $US 3.50
Subscription Price (NZ): $US 34.00 per 12mths Phone: +649 302 1318
Published: USA
Topics Covered: General, expert advice, training, News, health care, equipment and products
Review: Approx 120 pages. Certainly worth a look.  Good mix of articles, reader forums and expert advice.  Riding articles range from very basic advice to training clinics for the more advanced rider, although there's little specifically targeting the adult beginner.

The Horse Interactive

Price tba, original price $US 2.95
Subscription Price (NZ): $US 42.00 per 12mths
Published: USA
Topics Covered: Equine health topics
Review: 130 pages and highly recommended if you are interested in any aspect of horse health.  Articles are well written, easily understandable and comprehensive, average is around 4 pages per topic.  Also liked the impartiality of many of the articles, various viewpoints are provided.  Topics are diverse covering all aspects of horse health including dental, handling, nutrition, fitness and products

The website provides a searchable database of articles, these do not include the photos from the original magazine article and may have been shortened somewhat but it is still an excellent resource.  www.thehorse.com

Horse & Rider

Subscription Price (NZ): UK £44.60 per 12mths
Published: UK
Topics Covered: General Horse and Riding.
Review: Around 120 pages. (see below)

Your Horse and Horse & Rider are so alike that I often have to check the front cover to check which mag I'm reading.  However, both do an excellent job of providing lots of information for riding enthusiasts of all abilities.  There's also plenty of product reviews and experts providing riding advice readers' feedback areas and veterinary advice.  Riding clinics with readers  and expert instructors usually include plenty of helpful photos, diagrams and drawings to illustrate.
