Speed, precision, rapidity: the rider-horse
team must tackle a course of 6 to 14 obstacles, in a specific time,
committing the least possible faults.
A 'fault' is the term used for penalties incurred if a competitor knocks down an obstacle, refuses a jump, exceeds the time allowed etc. The winner of the competition is the competitor who incurs the least number of penalties, completes the course in the fastest time or gains the highest number of points, depending on the type of the competition. The great variety and different kinds of competitions add to the interest of competitors and spectators alike. Competitors usually jump the course several times as the competition progresses. With each round the size of the jumps or the time allowed is decreased. In each round the number of competitors may be decreased, with the final round(s) involving only those competitors who have completed 'clear' rounds. A final 'jump off' may occur if the top competitors remain on the same score. This is usually a round against the clock, where the rider must judge the risks of speed versus accuracy since it is the faster time + the number of faults together that counts. Puissance competitions are competitions of a single high fence. In these competitions it is the horse that can jump the highest that wins and fences of over 7' can be jumped by the top Puissance horses.

The
Premier Jumping Competitions are: • Olympic Games The Olympic Games take place every four years. • World Equestrian Games (WEG) The WEG are held every four years in the even years between the Olympic Games. • Continental Championships The Continental Championships are held on a biannual basis. • World Cup Series The World Cup Series, consisting of indoor competitions held between October and April. It is open to individual competitors qualified on the basis of the World Riders’ Rankings. This series culminates in a yearly final. • Nations Cup Series The Nations Cup Series, the equestrian world's oldest and most prestigious team competition dating back to 1909. With the exception of Games and Championships, it is the only competition in which official teams representing nations compare their merit. Since 1996, the series is supported by Samsung Electronics, Korea’s top electronics company and one of the major Olympic sponsors. In order to increase the interest among the riders, media and spectators, a new part in the form of a Super League has been added to the series. It begins in May 2003 and will without doubt bring additional excitement through a promotion/relegation system between the Samsung Super League and the Samsung Nations Cup Series at the end of each year. |
