Behavioural Training

Need help with your horse's basic manners? Got a specific problem or perhaps you are interested Natural Horsemanship but don't know where to start?  I can offer training, tutoring and objective advice.

Whether you are looking for the ultimate in performance or a greater bond with your horse it can be only be found if your horse is both willing and able to give it. Unfortunately, it is all too common for horse owners (and horses) to lack confidence, be stressed, frightened, worried or frustrated.

Natural\Traditional Horsemanship   Negative Reinforcement (R-)

I'm familiar with most Natural Horsemanship proponents and have had the pleasure of attending clinics with Pat Parelli, John Lyons, GaWani Pony Boy and Guy McLean (in person not just through second or third hand certified trainers).  Understand what negative reinforcement is and how to apply it correctly, whether using 'natural' or traditional training terms and techniques.

You may want someone to help start you off or to work on a particular problem.  Perhaps you just want to audit your techniques, checking and correcting your body language or observing your habits as you work with your horse without criticising the program that you have decided on.  Perhaps you would simply like to learn roundpen techniques or basic pressure-release (negative reinforcement) techniques without having to buy in to a whole program.  The choice is yours.

Clicker Training  Positive Reinforcement (R+)

Attitude and willingness to perform can also be affected by the training methods we choose to use. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool that creates a horse that wants to do whatever you ask it.  A horse that wants to impress you, rather than simply avoid discomfort or pain.

Learn about Clicker Training (positive reinforcement).  Let me guide you through an introduction to Clicker Training or with some one-on-one training with your horse(s) for more advanced behaviours and performance.

Learn how positive reinforcement can totally change your relationship with your horse.  Learn how to add clicker training to your current program or Natural or Traditional horsemanship.  There's much more to clicker training than just target training and I can help you work through common problems or help you add clicker to your current training methods.

Introductory or more advanced programs and clinics are available.

Key Benefits of Clicker Training

  • Your horse will learn how to learn quickly and be enthusiastic about your training sessions.
  • You learn how to teach your horse in a much more effective way, you learn how to break down tasks into learnable chunks.
  • The horse is never wrong, so Clicker Training is particularly effective for previously abused or very sensitive horses.
  • No force is required, just patience.  Timid or new horse owners can overcome even the most boisterous or bad mannered horse.

* Note the terms Negative and Positive do NOT refer to good or bad.  In behavioural psychology Negative simply refers to 'removal of something' - usually pressure-  and positive to 'addition of something' - a reward.
